Increasing a CMSF

Requests to increase a CMSF are reviewed and approved once per year.

The call for CMSF proposals goes out to the Divisional Finance Leaders (DFLs) in the Fall. Departments that would like to increase a CMSF should work with their DFLs to complete the Course Materials and Services Fee Proposal Form and return it to studentfees@berkeley.edu. Submissions must also be reviewed and approved by a Department Chair or Director and a Dean or Vice Chancellor.

After submission, proposals are reviewed by the Financial Planning & Analysis team and the CMSF Committee comprised of students, faculty, and staff. During either review, proposers may be asked to provide additional information or to revise and resubmit the proposal. Once a final recommendation has been made by the CMSF Committee, the proposals are presented to the Chancellor for approval.

Approved fee increases are programmed into Campus Solutions / Student Information System and published online in advance of the semester in which they will be charged.

Proposal timeline

  • Fall: The call for 2021-22 CMSF proposals went out December 9, 2020 with a proposal submission deadline of January 29, 2021
  • Spring: Proposals are reviewed by the CMSF Committee and approved by the Chancellor
  • Summer: Approved CMSF increases or decreases are programmed into Campus Solutions / Student Information System and published online

Decreasing or Eliminating a CMSF

Beginning in 2019-20, requests to decrease or eliminate a CMSF will be handled administratively by the CMSF Committee, which will review and approve these requests on a rolling basis. To request that a CMSF be reduced or eliminated, email studentfees@berkeley.edu with the following:

  • Course name and number
  • Description of the costs the CMSF is currently subsidizing
  • Reason you no longer require the CMSF at its current level

Such requests must be reviewed by your DFL, and your DFL must be CCed on your email request.

Other modifications to a CMSF

Occasionally other changes must be made to a CMSF. Such requests, including minor changes in the course number, name, or description, are handled administratively by the CMSF Committee. To request a modification to a CMSF, email studentfees@berkeley.edu with the following:

  • Course name and number
  • Description of the requested modification
  • Documentation to support the request

Such requests must be reviewed by your DFL, and your DFL must be CCed on your email request.
