We are pleased to share that Daniel Feitelberg has agreed to serve as interim vice chancellor of finance and chief financial officer for two years, beginning August 1, 2023. More than 125,800 students have applied for a seat in UC Berkeley’s fall 2023 freshman class, including a record number of California residents, according to new data released today.
The campus received 72,656 freshman applications from California residents, up from 72,417 in fall 2022. Applications from out-of-state and international students declined by almost 2%, resulting in a modest decline in the total overall number of freshman applications (125,874 for fall 2023 versus 128,129 the prior year).
The California Department of Education is making another historic investment in its educational leaders by awarding up to $12 million in additional funding over three years to the 21st Century California School Leadership Academy (21CSLA) State Center, a project housed and led by UC Berkeley School of Education in partnership with the UCLA School of Education and Information Studies and UC San Diego-based California Subject Matter Project. (Multi-year funding is subject to US Department of Education allocations and California state budget authority.)

A deep love of UC Berkeley, combined with an unwavering commitment to public education and to research and educational excellence, is what Ben Hermalin, Berkeley’s newly chosen executive vice chancellor and provost, says he’ll bring to his new post, which was announced today (Tuesday, Jan. 11) and will begin on July 1.

With COVID-19 cases surging and positivity rates on the rise, it’s clear we’re in for a challenging January. As we navigate the omicron wave it’s important that we be especially flexible and patient with one another. In this spirit, we’re writing to share some updates to our instructional plans for the spring semester.
Dear Staff and Faculty,
In a campus update sent before the curtailment, we shared our expectation that everyone get tested before returning to work, study, or live on campus. We’re writing to provide you with additional details and some important reminders.
The wait for UC Berkeley’s bold new home for research and innovation is nearly over.

Colleagues,
Updates to the Direct Bill system
This message was sent to all staff on Tuesday, May 18, 2021.
Dear Colleagues,
Effective July 1, all eligible PPSM covered Berkeley staff will be receiving an across-the-board 3 percent salary increase. This 2021-22 general salary increase program is for our policy-covered staff employees and academic appointees.
Staff employees and academic appointees who are represented by our various unions are not included in this program because their wages are governed by collective bargaining agreements.
This message was sent to all staff and faculty.
UC Berkeley Community,
We’re writing to provide an update on our planning to begin returning larger numbers of employees to on-site work to prepare for the return of students and “close-to-normal” operations for the Aug. 18 start of the fall semester.
This message was sent to all staff and faculty.
Dear Colleagues,
In recognition of the many challenges that UC employees continue to face, UCOP has decided to offer all its employees, including represented employees, an additional 2021 allotment of Emergency Paid Sick Leave (EPSL) - available for use immediately.
This additional EPSL is more generous than the federal law governing EPSL would require, and more generous than the COVID-19 supplemental paid sick leave signed into law by Governor Newsom on March 19, 2021.
Chancellor Carol Christ and Paul Alivisatos, executive vice chancellor and provost, sent the following message to the campus community on Tuesday:
We’re writing to provide an update on our instructional planning for the fall 2021 semester. While we previously announced plans to return to primarily in-person instruction for the fall, we know that you have many questions and we hope to provide some answers today.
This message was sent to all staff & faculty.
Dear Colleagues,
We wanted to update you on essential COVID-19 training and other public health matters that affect our Berkeley community. But first, please be on the lookout for an email from University Health Services’ e-Tang portal giving you the opportunity to signup to receive your COVID-19 vaccination right here on campus. We are encouraging all our staff and faculty to take immediate advantage of this when they receive their email invitation.
