Overview
Significant portions of the university’s revenue, such as state funding, tuition (resident and non-resident), indirect cost recovery, and investment income, are received into a central budget. From these funds, the central budget office:
- Returns thirty-three percent (33%) of tuition to financial aid to help offset the cost of fees for students who are eligible for financial aid in accordance with campus policy.
- Pays centrally managed costs.
- Distributes the renaming funds to the units.

Components of Central Funding Flows
Central Budget Office distributes centrally received revenues
- Returns thirty-three percent (33%) of tuition to financial aid to help offset the cost of fees for students who are eligible for financial aid in accordance with campus policy.
- Pays centrally managed costs for the campus for UCOP Assessment, UCPath, legal/compliance costs, purchased utilities such as gas and electricity for non-auxiliary units, debt service, and capital projects for campus-wide initiatives.
- Distributes the remaining funds to the units. You can see the amounts for your unit in the Operating Transfers accounts, with the Dept IDs rolling up to Campus Support and Campus Commitments in Cal Answers and CalPlanning.
Budget Office uses Operating Transfers accounts to distribute funds to the units
You can see the amounts for your unit in the Operating Transfers accounts. Within Operating Transfers, we have accounts for the General Allocation and for the various Campus Commitments.

- Faculty Start-up and Faculty Retention (71230 and 71240) are distributed quarterly

Campus Deliverables
Request approved campus support
The process to request in-year campus support funding is called queueing commitments. For commitments to be funded in a particular quarter, you must complete the forms no later than 30 days before the last day of the quarter. Exact timing and links to process documentation are included in the weekly email to DFLs.
