Please read below for the Office of VC Finance’s updates for the week ending today, August 31. Please continue to share the relevant information from these weekly updates (and the updates from the monthly DFL Forums) with the financial analysts in your division.

Operational Updates

FY2018-19 GAEL assessment increase from 1.15% to 1.55%

Please be advised that the General, Automobile, and Employment Liability (GAEL) coverage increased in FY2018-19  from 1.15% to 1.55% of payroll. This applies to all funds, including gifts and grants, with the exception of direct federal contracts, grants, and flow-throughs. GAEL liability assessment covers earthquake, cyber, and premium liability coverage mandated by the UC Office of the President. Additional information is available on the Risk Services website. Submit completed and approved September org tree change requests by Thursday, September 20

If you would like to submit changes to the Org Tree, please submit your completed, approved request by Thursday, September 20. As a reminder, the submission date is the last day that approved change requests can be submitted for entry to the September Master Org Tree. We recommend that you submit your change request form for review as soon as possible to allow time for the Financial Planning & Analysis team to review your request, follow-up with you for any necessary clarification, approve your request, and allow you time to obtain all required signatures before the submission date of September 20. The time needed to review change requests will vary, depending on the complexity of the request. For more information:

  • An overview of the org tree change submission deadlines is available in the FY19 Org Tree Submission Implementation Timeline.

  • Please submit questions and requests for changes to the Org Tree to dfl_concierge@berkeley.edu. Note: If you plan to request an Org Node change or Entity Hierarchy redesign, please contact dfl_concierge@berkeley.edu and explain what you would like to change before completing the request form because these changes are typically more complex and involve lengthier consultations.

Supply chartstrings for BEAR grants by Thursday, September 27

The Berkeley Excellence Accounts for Research Grants or BEAR grants support Berkeley's ladder faculty as they advance their research, scholarship, and creative accomplishment. This week we emailed the DFLs of academic divisions with the list of faculty Principal Investigators designated as eligible by the Academic Personnel Office (APO) for the FY2018-19 BEAR grant program. We included an attached spreadsheet which lists the chartstrings that were used last year (where applicable). Please review the list and confirm your chartstring or provide a new chartstring by emailing Rita d'Escoto at centralresourcemanagement@berkeley.edu no later than 5pm on Thursday, September 27. Strategic Project Updates

Join us at CAN on Friday, September 7 from 10:30am to 12pm to learn more about Our Berkeley

Our Berkeley is a new public-facing website featuring data and narratives on the major dimensions of UC Berkeley. Over 20 dashboards were developed and released in the course of the last year, spanning topics such as admissions, enrollment, demographics, instruction, financial aid, student outcomes, student experience, sponsored projects, and human resources. At this CAN session, presenters Russ Acker, Sara Quigley, and Noam Manor of the Office of Planning & Analysis will describe the full lifecycle of the project, focusing on their work with campus partners to help Berkeley achieve the goals of greater transparency for and increased awareness among both internal and external audiences. They will discuss the development process, team structure, review and approval of new dashboards, and the technologies used to create them. The session will conclude with a live demo and Q&A.
